There’s No Place like Village

Last night, I was completing an application for a fellowship for leaders who work among difference. When asked how my work facilitates connection across difference, I wrote the following:

“This Easter, I performed a baby dedication. As I said the words, “Heirani Reign Mbondop Kwankeuh, I dedicate you to God,” I looked into the congregation and saw an unforgettable level of difference: I saw attendees from Nigeria, Cameroon, Jamaica, and the Bahamas beside urban and rural Marylanders; I saw grandparents who have been in church their whole lives sitting beside families woh walked through our doors for the very first time this year. I saw people from every walk of life, every background, every story, all gathered in the same room, holding their breath over the same tiny miracle.

And in that moment, I thought: “This might be the last room like this left in America.”

For many, difference is something avoidable. Whether through geography, self-selection, or algorithmic sorting into tidy echo chambers, difference is becoming increasingly optional.

This is not true at Village Baptist Church, where I currently serve as Senior Pastor.”

...

If you hear me talk about Village enough, you’ll hear me say one thing over and over: I’ve never seen another church like it. Many Villagers knew this before I did—many before I was born—but it’s worth saying out loud. A Village as it should be is profoundly countercultural in a world wrenched with polarization and saturated with despair.

This is a place where people have decided that life together is worth more than the differences that supposedly divide us; a place where showing up for each other matters more than agreeing on everything.

This blog is an extension of that conviction. There’s No Place Like Village is where all of us, as a Village, will work out together what it means to be a church unlike any other. These reflections on our life together will be written by me, other Villagers, and friends of our community, with full honesty and excitement for what’s happening here.

This is the story of our life together, and there’s room in it for yours, too.

Because there’s no place like Village.

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Caleb
